Description & Objectives:
This session was recorded live at the 2018 ATI National Nurse Educator Summit in Salt Lake City, UT. 1 CNE will be provided upon completion. Attendees must submit a completed evaluation of the educational activity to receive their CNE certificate. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) does not stipulate or recommend a single model of advising.  Doctoral students need advice to plan their curriculum, manage school-lifework balance, develop the DNP project, ensure completion of all essentials, and transition into the role of a nurse leader.  This presentation will discuss an innovative approach to student advising using the Appreciative Advising (AA) model.   Approaches to individual and group advising to assist students in program progression and preparation for leadership in health systems or academia will be shared.

Objective:
  • Discuss the disconnect between established advising and the needs of students.
  • Define Appreciative Advising and the six stages of advising.
  • Explain the DNP-specific model and its four components and the implications for nursing education.
